Add Chrome Applications to Desktop or Task Bar

Google Chrome isn’t only for web browsing, but for using Apps. Now, most apps only have support for in-browser actions, such as Google Calendar. This means when you open the App, it just opens a new Tab to that website. But recently I wrote about Google Keep and their Chrome App. The Google Keep App gives you an independent window from Chrome that looks like a normal desktop application. The App stills works the same as the Apps that open in new tabs, but they just appear to be programs instead of websites. Today, I will show you how easy it is to put a Chrome App on your Desktop, Taskbar, or anywhere else.

Getting to your apps it simple. Each list item will show you a different way to do so.

  • Open a new tab. On the bottom click on “Apps”
  • Navigate to chrome://apps
  • In Chrome Beta, there should be an Apps Bookmark in your Bookmarks Bar

Now that you are on your Apps, find one you want easy access to. For me, I need Google Calendar right away.

  1. Right click on the App you want a shortcut to.
  2. Click on “Create Shortcuts…”, usually the last item in the list.
  3. On the popup window, pick where you want it. Such as Start Menu, Desktop, or Pin to Task Bar. Your Task Bar is where all your Opened applications appear.

You can do this to any applications, but some will act as opening a new browser window with the app, others have better support such as Google Keep, which has a nice “Independent” frame.
